Yesterday I posted some in progress screen caps of some illustration I was doing on a photo and I got asked to post a series of each stage of the process. I’ve tried to avoid drawing digitally lately because it’s definitely not as comfortable or natural as traditional tools. Through illustrating these set of photos I’ve really begun to enjoy drawing in photoshop.
As you can see one benefit of digital is that I start out with a rough guide for the shape and flow of the tentacle. I next draw in the suckers and the changes of angle and then the rest. I shade in grey because I think it gives me a better grasp of the lights and darks, and then add colour afterwards. Many of these stages are done on different layers with different blending. The outlines are drawn with a standard round brush with shape dynamics set to alter the size based on pen pressure and angle* and the shading brush is a custom brush of my own.
Hopefully this technical info answers many of the questions I’ve received but if you have any more just leave it in a comment and I’ll be happy to reply! You can also see a larger version on flickr
*I use an Intuos 3 tablet.

Hey all! It’s been a while, and my only excuse is that I’ve barely been home since April with last minute jobs all over the place. I even got to work on a teevee pilot for Showtime down in LA two weeks ago where I was lucky enough to learn a whole lot about video.
I’m not here to waffle on about what I have been up to. I just wanted to bring you some exciting news. Here in Vancouver there is an amazing team who put on an art show called The Cheaper Show. It’s an incredible concept and I remember hearing about it about it when I moved to Vancouver and how it convinced me the arts are alive and strong here. The basic premise is that it’s a huge art show featuring 200 artists (local and international), with roughly 2 pieces each. Each piece is sold for $200.
It’s a great way to introduce people to the world of buying original art without the huge price tags, as well as building and contributing to the local arts community in a big way. This show is in its 9th year and a couple of days ago my friend Lindsay called to say that their photographer had pulled out last minute. Of course I leapt at the chance to work on such a fantastic show, and now I’ll be covering events for them from next Thursday-Sunday.
Attending one of the meetings on Tuesday solidified my excitement at photographing such a monumentus event. So much hard work and dedication has gone into putting on the show you wouldn’t believe.
If you live in Vancouver please come by and show your support! The show opens on Saturday June 26th from 6pm and runs until midnight. Suggested donations at the door are $5 and if you donate $10 or more you receive a wrist band that gets you into any of the three after parties for free.

Another three week long trip and two conventions took me away from my desk for a while! I was a bit disappointed in my lack of time/motivation to sketch while on the road. I’m going to put it all down to it being a stressful trip of sorts, but I plan to do my best to prevent that from happening in the future.

Well, throwing myself right back in there now that I’m home, even though I have taxes, freelance and SG work to get to before April 30th. Making time to keep my sketchy little hands busy is priority.

Much to the disdain of my high school art teacher I used to only want to work in pen and ink. I guess she was trying to help me be well rounded and discover other media, but I really wanted to master one thing before I moved onto something else. These days I’m the opposite; I guess you could call me a medium slut. Still, I know where my first love is should I need some comfort…
