lunch at finch’s

Yesterday, in the midst of running errands downtown and fighting off a summer cold I managed to find time to have a lunch break at one of my favourite places in downtown Vancouver. Finch’s tea and coffee house is on the corner of Pender and Homer streets. It’s a beautiful one-room place in an old building with windows for walls; it’s old for Vancouver which I realise is not saying much.

The atmosphere is just brimming with life and people watching is at it’s prime. But, I’m not here to write a review of the place, although I will tell you the main reason I fall in love with it a little more every time: there is the tiniest sparkle of true Britishness in the menu, the decor and the hustle and bustle nature of it all. Hell, they actually have egg and soldiers on their breakfast menu alongside marmite on toast. There are many places on the west coast of Canada to claim British influence but it’s always so… Disney.

On my latest lunch adventure I gratefully poured a cold blackcurrant cordial down my throat and it caused the most wonderful feeling of nostalgia. After that I didn’t really care about anything else for a while. Well, until my delicious apple-smoked cheddar sandwich appeared. Since you couldn’t be there in person, I thought I’d bring a little of the atmosphere and people watching home with me…

Yes, it’s so delicious. With balsamic and oil and pepper too. I would have taken a photo but I was too busy eating. Ha!
