7 Reasons I don’t go to photography conventions…

… like Imaging USA. Okay, so I lied today there is only one reason. I’m asked* why I always attend tattoo, science fiction and comics conventions but not photography conventions. Well, I could probably give you a laundry list of reasons why those cons are so much more stimulating (and fun) for a photographer/artist. Not to mention the number of connections I make at non-photography cons.

*I’m often asked at those conventions when people inevitably begin asking what I do for a living

Yesterday an email hit my inbox with a marketing force I’d yet to experience. Naturally, I read it and as you will see for yourself I promptly burst out laughing.

7 Reasons not to attend Imaging USA

Allow me to translate for you:

Ahem… “Dear Photographers, We’d really like you to come to Imaging USA this year! We know how much you hate the outdoors and natural environments, and especially using your feet to get you places you may never have been before. So, we’ve tried to make this easy for you.

Photographers! We’re talking to you – This year you don’t even have to leave a building or be distracted by all that stimulus and inspiration in the real world. Hang up your hat for the weekend and come learn how to take pretty pictures in our climate controlled environment of the future. Oh, yes, don’t forget to spend your money in our prosumer hall of wank material. Can’t wait to see you! Much Love, Imaging USA.

PS Leave those pesky cameras behind; you won’t be needing them where we’ll be!”

So, maybe I am being a bit trite here, but I was told to never apologise to your audience.

I have actually stopped calling my self a photographer in public situations, because I am not the image of an overzealous Photo enthusiast that this title now tends to evoke. There needs to be a new type of convention where the art is discussed as apposed to the gear. All anyone talks about is the gear and the $$ for the gear. I hate it!! I am not that guy but I get lumped in with it all. Didn’t mean to rant here it is just the third time this morning that this topic has come up.

    Great work! BTW

A stupid post. If you’ve been to convention the size of Imaging, you’d know that most are scattered over a city where you waste more time walking all over the place than actually attending good sessions.

As for The_Jerk, Imaging IS about the Art as the International Print Competition Exhibit is on display there. You would see images that have been judged by master photographers.

Imaging is an EXPO and convention that will inspire you to shoot more than cans of PBR…you shouldn’t be calling yourself a photographer.

    Dr. Kenneth Noisewat–

Way to hide behind a pseudonym. I would love to see some of your work, so we can judge you and your talent. Just because you go to conventions does not make you an expert. Ever been published in books (notice the plural) like Miss Vega has? Or being one of the most sought after photographers on the internet like she is? Or even been featured in WIRED magazine?

    Didn’t think so.
